The four best statehouse primary races in the metro this August:
•Benjamin Hodge of Overland Park vs. Tim Owens of Overland Park for the 8th District Kansas Senate seat held by Barbara Allen, who is retiring. It’s youth (Hodge is 28) vs. experience (Owens is 62). It’s a conservative (Hodge) against a moderate.
•Sue Gamble vs. Mary Pilcher Cook for the 10th District Kansas Senate seat being vacated by Nick Jordan. Another classic moderate (Gamble) vs. conservative showdown.
•John Joseph Rizzo vs. John Burnett for the 40th District Missouri House seat in northeast Kansas City. This is their third matchup. This time, Rizzo runs with the backing of Jackson County Executive Mike Sanders.
•Jason Kander vs. Amy Coffman in the race for the 44th District Missouri House seat in south Kansas City. He’s a military vet who’s walking and knocking like crazy. She’s a former staffer in the Alaska Legislature and a senior citizen advocate. Two quality candidates. A coin flip, insiders say. Also running: Mary Cosgrove Spenc
